IBM Integration Designer (formerly IBM WebSphere Integration Developer) delivers tooling for visually constructing services, data transformations, Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) orchestrations, and integration to applications and source systems. Integration Designer is now a key component of IBM Business Process Manager Advanced.

Integration Designer is the integration design tooling part of the IBM BPM Advanced configuration authoring environment. You can use IBM BPM Advanced to construct services, data transformations, BPEL processes, and integration to applications and source systems. Integration Designer is used in collaboration with the process design tool to create robust and scalable process solutions. Integration Designer includes a comprehensive set of adapters to service-enable your assets, including packaged, custom, and legacy applications, technology protocols, and databases. Integration Designer is fully compatible with the latest versions of WebSphere Integration Developer.

In addition, Integration Designer is the development tool for developing mediation flows that run on WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, and Integration Designer provides tooling to create XML services that run on WebSphere DataPower.

WebSphere Portal is a framework--including a runtime server, services, tools, and many other features--that you can use to integrate your enterprise into a single, customizable interface called a portal. An enterprise portal combines components, applications, processes, and content from a wide variety of sources into a unified presentation, which your users can access from a wide variety of devices.

You can customize the portal based on user or job roles, security needs, device settings, personal preferences, and administrative settings. You can also define workflows to support your business processes. You can manage your portal's content using IBM's Web Content Management, which is integrated with WebSphere Portal. Figure 1 shows an example company portal.

While WebSphere Portal binds your work environment into a cohesive interface, it also provides services to enhance the user experience so that the unified interface is much richer than if you were using the individual components.

For example, it provides single sign-on services so that, once users are logged into your portal, they can access all the underlying applications without having to re-enter user credentials (such as userids and passwords). You can plug in the look-and-feel for your portal's pages using customizable themes. Using the collaboration services API, you can enable users to easily engage peers to expedite work processes. Using cooperative portlets, applications can exchange information, either automatically or with user control. These are just a few examples of the ways you can easily extend your portal environment and optimize your users' experience with it.

WebSphere Portal is a core part of IBM Workplace. Numerous other related products, includingWebSphere Voice and the WebSphere Everyplace products, work with WebSphere Portal to enable users to access applications running on virtually any operating system. Users can access the portal from all types of devices, such as Web browsers, rich clients, mobile phones, and PDAs.

TIBCO ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks is a scalable, extensible, and easy to use integration platform that allows you to develop integration projects. TIBCO ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks uses the TIBCO Designer graphical user interface (GUI) for defining business processes and the TIBCO ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks process engine executes the business processes. ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks supports plug-ins. When you install a plug-in, activities for the plug-in become available in the TIBCO Designer interface. You can add the plug-in activities to the business process you are designing, and integrate them with the process flow. At runtime, the plug-in activities are executed as part of the ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks process execution.

The TIBCO ActiveMatrix BusinessWorks Plug-in for Facebook is unique in its powerful integration capabilities, and also unique in its dependency on another company's product. Because the plug-in uses the public APIof the platform, in this case, the Facebook Graph API, any open issues that have been reported against the third-party API result in problems with the plug-in. If Facebook makes changes to their public API, theactivities functionality might become limited or might change.

Because the information about the activities is easy to extract from the Facebook Developer documentation, this manual's focus is on an overview of each activity's tab. The manual also includes a typical example scenario for each activity. For example, the Graph Query example scenario queries the feed for a user you specify.

Unlike middleware running on traditional application environments, there is no one specific role that one can affix to DataPower. DataPower defies generic labeling. The reasons for this are:

Hardened security: It can act purely as a security gateway.
Appliance versatility: It is easy to add to the the network at various points to perform different functions. 
XML lingua franca: The promise of XML-speak is uniformity, simplicity, and transparency of handling data. Being XML-centric from   
                                           core upwards gives DataPower the ability to adapt to different roles.
Any-to-any transformation: The ability to transform any data format allows it to be an integration device.
Multi-protocol support: This allows it to be a integration device or bridge for heritage applications.

All the above are bolstered by the ease-of-use factor. Consumability is a core competence of DataPower. DataPower is consumable at different levels:

Installation: As a network appliance it can be up and running in literally a few minutes.
Development cycle: On-board Web GUI based approach to creating and managing applications gets rid of the develop-deploy   
                                             round trip development methodology. 
Development model: The modeling uses the building-block approach where the application is built using a collection of objects one on top of another. The granularity of  these objects maps comfortably to architectural components of typical applications.

All the above enable WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliances to be used in a variety of ways, depending on the task at hand.

WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliances provide the ability to understand and act upon application data as it traverses the network. While this application awareness is not, in itself, a new networking concept, XML has accelerated its appeal and difficulty. That is, application awareness comes with many security, complexity, and performance challenges. As a result, a new genre of hardened software, hardware, and XML-centric appliances has arisen to bridge this gap. 

These appliances focus on providing consumability, performance, and hardened security. They can extend the ESB into the network and also provide an SOA gateway for business-to-business integration. This introductory chapter gives an overview of IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliances, their features and architecture, as well as a quick summary of the approach taken to use and deploy the appliances in the service-oriented architecture.
